How To Ask For What You Want

Posted by on

Maybe you haven't truly asked yourself what it is you want. Maybe you have and you're scared to put words to it. No matter where you are, the way to get what you want is through self-reflection and speaking up for yourself. You may be asking yourself, "Where do I start?" Let's get into that.

Clearly Define What It Is You Want

Self reflection is a great place to start. Ask yourself what you want the most out of life and make a list. What are your goals and aspirations? What do you want five, ten, or twenty years from now? What do you want today? It doesn't have to be career-oriented. It can be what you want from your relationships or personal growth, too. Of course, some of those things may change over time, and that is okay. That is part of growing. Still, writing your desires down will help you see the bigger picture, which will help you take steps to reach it.

Find Your Voice

You know that little voice inside your head, or that gut feeling in the pit of your stomach? That's typically referred to as your intuition. Your intuition is there to help guide you in the direction that is most authentic to you. Utilize your voice to stand up for what you believe you deserve, whether that's a promotion at your job, social justice, or what you need in your various relationships. Using your voice is an act of self care because it is helping you not only recognize but also propel the act of setting and enforcing your boundaries.

Set And Enforce Your Boundaries

Setting and enforcing your boundaries is crucial for yourself and for others to know where you stand. Take into account how the things you do or what's asked of you can take a toll on your mental, physical, and emotional health. Then, act in your best interest. This could look like saying no to a late night out on the town when you have work the next day. Just remember that speaking up is what can be the shift from just setting the boundary to enforcing it.

Everything takes time and you don't and won't always know the answer right away, so be patient with yourself. Just listen to your intuition and ask yourself, is this what I want?
