WHAT IS & IS NOT IN OUR 10-FREE NAIL POLISHES?

Our nail lacquers are made without the following toxic chemicals:

  • Toluene is used as a solvent.  Exposure to toluene may occur from breathing ambient or indoor air affected by such sources.  The central nervous system (CNS) is the primary target organ for toluene toxicity in both humans and animals for acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) exposures. Human studies have reported developmental effects, such as CNS dysfunction, attention deficits, and minor craniofacial and limb anomalies, in the children of pregnant women exposed to high levels of toluene or mixed solvents by inhalation.
  • Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) is a plasticizer.  It appears to have relatively low acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) toxicity. No studies are available on the reproductive, developmental, or carcinogenic effects of dibutyl phthalate in humans.  This toxin was, however, added to the California Proposition 65 list of suspected teratogens, which are agents that cause malformations of an embryo. Animal studies have reported developmental and reproductive effects from oral exposure.
  • Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas at room temperature and has a strong odor. The primary way you can be exposed to formaldehyde is by breathing air containing off-gassed formaldehyde.  Formaldehyde can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers.
  • Formaldehyde Resin is a synthetic derivative of Formaldehyde.  It is not as toxic as Formaldehyde but may be an allergen.
  • Camphor is a waxy, flammable, white or transparent solid with a strong aromatic odor. In small doses, effects on the body include skin flushing, slower breathing, reduced appetite, increased secretions and excretions such as perspiration and diuretic.
  • Xylene is a solvent. It is irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. It can cause systemic toxicity by ingestion or inhalation. it's also a known allergen and possible carcinogen, according to research from the International Agency on Research For Cancer Scientific Publications Series.
  • Ethyl Tosylamide is is a highly viscous liquid used primarily as plasticizer and film former in coatings like nail polish. Ethyl Tosylamide also as acts as a secondary film former. Ethyl tosylamide has already been barred from personal care products in Europe because of its antibiotic properties and concern over antibiotic resistance.
  • Parabens are a preservative. Parabens are also said to be cancer-causing. Paraben compounds mimic estrogen and in high doses can potentially alter your body’s hormone production.
  • We are also free of lead, acetone, gluten, and TPHP.

Why it is Important? All Rooted Woman nail lacquers are made 10-Free because we value your safety! Although nail lacquers cannot be made entirely with organic ingredients (yet), we have been intentional about ensuring that Rooted Woman nail lacquers are safer!

What are the ingredients? Butyl Acetate (organic compound found in fruits such as apples); Ethyl Acetate (organic compound that’s soluable in water; often found in decaffinated tea/coffee); Nitrocellulose (corrosive mineral acid and starch); Acetyl Tributyl Citrate (organic compound; often used in food packing materials); Benzophenone-1 (UV blocker used in sunscreens); Trimethypentanediyl Dibenzoate (plasticizer); Adipic Acid (organic compound; food acidity regulator); Isopropyl Alcohol (antimicrobial; “rubbing alcohol”); and Stearakonium Bentonite (alumniosilcate clay; type of fatty acid).
